Why We Created iceDQ
After earning his mechanical engineering degree in 1996, Sandesh Gawande began his career at ADCC Pvt Ltd, an Indian software startup, where he worked with PowerBuilder, Oracle, and developed ERP data models using Erwin.
In 1999, he dedicated himself fully to data engineering, working on projects spanning data modeling, data architecture, ETL, and data quality. He designed and built data warehouses and big data solutions, and led migration initiatives for major companies in banking, insurance, healthcare, and manufacturing.
During the implementation of a data warehouse at an insurance firm, three critical gaps became impossible to ignore:
- No one was testing the data pipelines under development.
- There was no monitoring of incoming data, files, or processing within the pipelines.
- The team's attention was focused exclusively on the final datasets.
The root cause? They were measuring quality at the end - rather than engineering quality during development and operations.
With a background in mechanical engineering, Sandesh recognized that data systems share fundamental similarities with factories:
A. Build and Test: Data pipelines are machines that require careful construction, testing, and deployment.
B. Monitor the Processing: Once in production, raw data is ingested and the pipeline - much like an assembly line - processes it. Both the data and the pipeline must be monitored at every stage.
C. Inspect Before Delivery: Just like manufacturing, the final processed data must be inspected for deficiencies before release.
The conclusion was clear: Data systems must be treated like factories, and data must be treated as a product - engineered from day one, not just measured at the end and hoped for the best.
Previously, most organizations only checked data after it was processed - ignoring testing during development and monitoring in production. Drawing inspiration from manufacturing quality control, Sandesh built a comprehensive data reliability platform:
